KATHMANDU (KANTIPUR)
Kathmandu :   The city in its present form was built by King Gunakama Deva in 723 AD and derives its present name from Kasthamandap, and imposing Pagoda near Durbar Square. Kathmandu abounds in large palaces, lofty Buddhist pagodas, beautiful and delicately produced temples, museums, gardens as well as a royal game sanctuary at Gokarna, a few minutes drive away. There is so much to see, it is difficult to decide where to start.
White Machhindra Nath Temple :   Located at Machhindra Bahal is revered as the God Mercy &  rain.
Hanuman Dhoka :   A complex of numerous temples &  monuments, guarded by huge statue of the monkey god –Hanuman &  evolved  to  its presents state of maturity over a period of centuries with contributions from a number of  dynasties, headed by Malla Kings. 

This historic palace was where many ancient king of Nepal were crowned and  their coronation solemnised . Here are complex examples of Nepal’s art and architecture, prominent among them being the towering nine-storeyed edifice—Kailash. 

This multi tiered structure in all probability a watch tower and a fort, was once believed to be a temple. A stone sculpture of Kali(Black) Bhairav, the god of  Destruction and the huge sculptured bronze head of sweta (White) Bhairav, are close by. The lofty and really unique temple of Taleju Bhavani  built by king Mahendra Malla in 1549 AD  plus other temples have been built along the periphery of Hanuman Dhoka.

Other places of interest are:1)Basantapur Durbar,2) the Hall of Public Audience ,3) the big bell,4) Jagannath temple,5) statue of king Pratap Malla with his four sons on a  tall stone monolith. The old palace building also houses the Tribhuwan Memorial Museum and the Numismatic Museum.
Kumari (Virgin) the living Goddess :   The wooden balconies and windows of the residence of the living Goddess near the Durbar Square is profusely carved. It was built by king Jaya Prakash Malla in 1760 AD. Visitors may enter only the courtyard below and look up to the window where the virgin Goddess appears for those who wish to see her. She also acknowledges the worship of the devotees from the balcony of Her temple-residence. Photography is prohibited.
Kashthamandap :   The wooden temple made of the timber from a single tree was built in  the 17th century by King Laxmi Narsingh Malla.
Swayambhunath :   One of the world’s oldest Buddhist chaityas is said to be 2000 years old. A solid hemispare of brick and earth supporting a cornice of copper and gilt comprise the stupa which form of the main structure. The all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha are painted on the four sided base of the spire. It is situated two miles west of Kathmandu City and on a hillock 250 feet high above the level of the valley. Small chaityas and pagoda temples adorn this hill lending it great dignity and beauty.
Natural History Museum :   Houses over 14000 of unique collectors of butterflies, birds mammals, fishes, plants &  Fossils recorded within the country and is situated behind the Swayambhunath hillock.
National Museum :   Except Tuesday one can have the historical and archaeological general idea from the remarkable and wide range of weapons of war antiques on display.
Martyr's Memorail :   Archway of the busts of Martyr’s and late King Tribbhuban Bir Bikram Shah, leader of the revolution of 1950-51.
Balaju Water Garden :   It is famous for the 22 dragon headed water spouts and an image of sleeping Vishnu.
Pashupatinath Temple :   Though only Hindus are allowed to go inside the courtyard of temple, visitors can clearly see the temple and the activities from the eastern bank of Bagmati river. With two-tier golden roof, silver doors and superb architecture, the Pashupatinath temple is venue of an annual pilgrimage on the day of Shivaratri (Feb).
Gusheswari Temple :   A Shrine of Goddess Sati (Parvati), Lord Shiva's Consort, where only Hindus are allowed.
Boudhanath Stupa :   The colossal and ancient Buddhist stupa is one of the biggest stupas in the world.
Dakshinkali/Pharping :   The site of the Kali temple is famous for the beautiful natural surroundings and Pharping has the shrine of Shesh Narayan which is situated beneath a stalactite rock .
Kirtipur :   A plateau shaped ridge, this is a typical old city of Nepal. The Tribhuwan University is situated at its base.
Chovar Gorge :   Tradition has it that Manjushree cut the gorge to drain Kathmandu Valley, which was then a lake.
Budhanilkantha :   An Ancient 7th century image of the sublime Lord Vishnu sleeping on a bed of serpents - a superb example of the art of stone sculpture of Nepal.
